Grownup Accommodations

Boutique Accommodations in Saskatchewan

Despite its wide-open spaces and rural landscapes, Saskatchewan offers a wide range of boutique accommodations, whether you are looking for a modern hotel on the banks of the Saskatchewan River, or a quirky stay in a grain bin or former convent.

SASKATOON

ALT HOTEL, Saskatoon

Saskatoon skyline and bridge at night The Alt Hotel is the highrise on the left on the banks of the Saskatchewan River

Part of the St. Germain hotels which are known for their stylish, modern decor, the Alt has an absolutely ideal location, right on the banks of the Saskatchewan River and its boardwalk. Plus it’s directly opposite the Remai modern art museum, (well worth visiting), and only a short walk from downtown. The hotel itself offers comfortable rooms, although not overly fussy or huge, and a decent on-site restaurant and bar with an outdoor patio.

BLACKSTRAP GLAMPING RESORT

Blackstrap Glamping Resort The Jack morning vibes

Not far from Saskatoon (like 25 minutes) is Blackstrap Provincial Park, where you will find luxurious geodesic domes that operate independently but within the Park grounds. These domes are year-round structures, and feel more like mini boutique hotels, each one having its own unique decor scheme, and all with top-notch amenities, including heated floors in their bathrooms, sumptuous linens, robes, a fully-stocked kitchenette and more. ROSETOWN

ALIVE SKY, Rosetown

Alive Sky Lodge BOHO bin The 2-story BOHO bin sleeps 4 and has a balcony.

It’s hard to describe exactly whether Alive Sky is a farm or boutique inn or B&B, but ‘unique’ is definitely the word for it. The owners of this prairie farm offer a bed-and-breakfast experience in unusual accommodations, ranging from a former bunkhouse for farm hands (great for larger groups with several individual rooms that share common spaces) to one-of-a-kind former grain bins that have been outfitted as luxury tiny homes. The owners are creative, hospitable and entrepreneurial, and even deliver hot breakfasts come morning. This is a definite must-do for an unforgettable stay. (Still not convinced? You can read more about it here.)

VAL MARIE

THE CONVENT INN, Val Marie (near Grasslands National Park’s West Block)

The Convent Inn Val Marie Saskatchewan The Convent Inn in Val Marie

Tiny doesn’t begin to describe the rural town of Val Marie, but this place is the closest option for accommodations near  the National Park’s West side, unless you are prepared to camp. The Convent Inn is exactly what it sounds like: a former convent/school that has been converted into a small B&B. Quirky, yes, but the comfy beds and linens are a lovely alternative to air mattresses, the breakfast is good and the owners know everything about the area. (Note that the rooms do not have ensuites, so you will need to go down the hall to the washrooms.) Still, it’s better than camping in my books and you can easily access all the sights in Grasslands.
